My Favorite Things – Out of This World

My Favorite Things – Out of This World

For my third and final entry for the MFT Card Design Superstars contest, I grabbed Out of This World, another MFT set that has been languishing in my stash unused since I got it. As I pondered what to do with it, I decided I would make another interactive card. I wanted to have the rocket ship "take off" and I started thinking about ways and means and decided to do a slider card with multiple layers of acetate to allow me to have the rocket take off and have flames coming out. I also wanted to hide one of the aliens behind the ship so that he would show up after the ship took off. This took a lot of tinkering to get right, but next time I want to make one, I'll know how to do it. Lookie:

STINKIN' CUTE! I used the Stitched Rounded Rectangles to create both the opening in the front and the pull tab at the top. Now watch it work:

Basically, there are three layers of acetate. The one that is the window in the front, the layer that has the rocket ship on it, and the layer with the flames. I had to construct it very carefully so that the pieces would not catch on the background or each other and would slide back into place.

I created a space background with Distress inks and spattered it with water, then used the Stars in the Sky Vertical die to create the stars and positioned some Pineapple cardstock behind it. I colored the ship, the planet in the sky, and the alien with Copics.

I create the planet the ship is sitting on with Steel Blue card stock and the Snowdrifts dies the used the Distress Spritzer tool to spritz with Black Soot and Picket Fence Distress markers.

The trick was making the flames go behind the planet and the rocket ship go in front. I used layers of chipboard to create the channels for each layer of acetate so that it would work.

I love how it turned out!

  • Oh my gosh, I think this is just a hoot and a half! Adorable! I understand the basic concept, but it boggles my mind to think you have 3 layers of acetate & they work so perfectly! Amazing design, Jan. ?

  • This is so great!! I wish you would make a video on how you actually made it. Or written instructions with sizes. I know I want a lot!! Enjoy all your creative work & your personality that comes through your writing!! You make me laugh, which is great. Thanks!!
