October Essentials by Ellen Release Mini Hop – Bear Hugs Die

October Essentials by Ellen Release

Welcome to my blog! If you’re here, you probably just arrived from Carissa Wiley’s blog. If not, keep going and eventually you will get to her blog! I will have a complete list of blogs participating in the hop at the end, so you won’t miss any. There will be 3 additional days to the release hops, including Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

I was so thrilled to be asked to do a guest design spot for this beautiful Essentials by Ellen release from Ellen Hutson LLC featuring new stamps and dies from Julie Ebersole and Brandi Kincaid and so very excited to be asked to hop on the release day with such wonderful designers!

In return for my efforts, I got the whole release plus some materials to create great projects with the Bear Hugs die designed by my friend, Julie Ebersole! Julie and I go WAY back, back to Splitcoaststampers.  We served together on the Dirty Dozen, and there are many happy memories I have from that time. But this is today, and I got to use this STINKIN’ CUTE die! Lookie:

Guys, it’s my favorite bear from All Inside! For felt! He’s AMAZING, and I had so much fun playing with him! On to the projects.

I used Taylored Expressions felt to make my bears, cutting two of the main bear pieces and one each of the arm, nose, and eye pieces. It’s beautiful thick wool felt, and it comes in many beautiful colors. I found the easiest way to stuff my bears was to cut quilt batting to a shape that filled the inside of the bear and then lay it between the two bear pieces before stitching them together. I didn’t worry about filling the feet or the ears. I stitched the bears together using DMC floss and then used Tombow Mono Multi to glue the eyes and nose and, for this bear, the heart and leaves. I also decided to turn my first bear into a magnet by slipping a couple of ceramic button magnets in, one in his head and one in his bottom, before stitching him together. He looks SO CUTE on the fridge or on a filing cabinet, and he will make the perfect reminder that someone is loved by you. But then I wanted a way to present him to make him special so I decided that a pocket card would be the best option. The nice thing is the magnets are strong enough that you can put him on the fridge by himself or you can put the whole pocket with the bear in it on the fridge to enjoy all of it.

I started out by cutting a 4-1/4″ x 11″ piece of heavy-weight Neenah Solar White cardstock, scoring at 5-1/2″. I then ran one half of this through the Big Shot with the Essentials by Ellen Stitches Cover Plate. I then cut the notch for my bear using My Favorite Things Sentiment Label Strip. It cut exactly the right size notch in the pocket that holes the bear.

Then I started decorating the pocket with Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Ink, making a soft blend and using water to create happy spots all over it. I also made some strips for these sentiments the same way, stamped them with sentiments from Bear Ware 2, and cut them out with the MFT Stitched Sentiment Strips dies.

I created a beautiful autumn sky backdrop for my bear using the MFT Cloud Stencil and stamps from Bear Ware 2. Isn’t this just like that deep blue you see only in the fall? I folded the pocket half up and used some Be Creative tape along the edges of the pocket for a strong bond.

The heart is one of the dies included with the Bear Hugs die, but the tiny leaves are a die from the Bear Ware 2 matching dies.

I added a little baker’s twine and a couple of Doodlebug Design Gold Sprinkles.

For my second project, I decided to make a garland of bears! I was able to work with different shades of felt, and since I had the dies from Snailed It that had some attractive leaves, I decided to cut out lots of leaves as well. Lookie:

SO CUTE!!! This is such a great festive touch to add to your autumn decor. This garland is about 24″ long from bear to bear, so it would be perfect to put on your front door or hang in a doorway or over a window. To make the garland, I attached the bears’ arms the opposite way and in between the two layers.

I thought originally about sewing the bear paws together, but felt is not a woven fabric, and the kind of strain that would put on the fabric would probably pull it apart. So instead, I grabbed some older SU! cording that I had laying around from a couple years back. When I made my product list, I could not find it anywhere, but something similar would work very well. A nice thick jute cording would also work.

I glued tiny leaves cut using the leaf die from Bear Wear 2 to the heads of the bears and made leaf bunches with dies from Snailed It and Bear Ware 2.

I stitched the bears to the cord and tied the leaf bunches onto the cord in between the bears.

I added some orange sequins to the leaves on the bears and the leaf bunches to dress it up a bit. This reminded me SO MUCH of these foam magnets my grandmother used to make with a colorful thin foam and sequins. My grandma loved sparkle, and I have a feeling she’d love this garland!

SO CUTE!!! I would love to add this to my autumn decor, but my oldest daughter, Laurel, BEGGED me for it, and since it was her birthday, I gave it to her. Then, my bear magnet card got appropriated by Emily, my middle child, so I am now bear-less. But, GUYS, they are so easy to make, and I can think of many ideas for Christmas, Valentines, and just about any occasion! I’m going to make a bunch more!

Below is my list of products that I used, and I have used compensated affiliate links where they were available, Buying through these links costs you nothing extra and helps support my blog and my artistic endeavors, and I thank you.
