Fab Friday 125 – Simon Says Stamp Stained Glass Greetings and Kaleidoscope Background

This week we have a sketch challenge:

At first I was at a loss as to what to use for this. Patterned paper? A piece stamped with smaller stamps to create a background? Or a background stamp. I had recently acquired some new things from Simon Says Stamp’s latest release, and I realized that they would be perfect for this sketch.

GOJUS!!! I decided to use a technique I had tried before from Kristina Werner using embossing resist and Distress ink watercoloring. Like an idiot, I didn’t watch the video again, figuring I knew what I was doing. I starting out by picking my colors, which were Broken China, Picked Raspberry, Peeled Paint, and Seedless Preserves. I stamped the background stamp on watercolor paper and heat embossed with white EP. I then dabbed the ink pads on my craft sheet, spritzed with water and started picking up the colors with the watercolor paper, much as I usually do with Distress Oxide.

But that isn’t how Kristina did it. She put the paper down and picked up ONCE. This paper looked awful and muddy in many places almost immediately, with all the inks blending in a way that I didn’t want. I thought about flinging it in the wastebasket and starting over, and I thought, “NO! Why not start painting some of the areas in with these colors and see what happens?” And I’m glad I did!

The blended colors in the dipped portions of the watercolor paper really made the painted colors pop MORE.

Even the areas that looked a bit muddy really worked great! After I finished this piece, I had to cut it into four quarters, which was painful! It was so pretty, I didn’t want to trim it down or cut it, but I gritted my teeth and did it. I mounted the four pieces on a piece of Broken China Tim Holtz Distress Collection card stock.

I created the greeting using Ranger Liquid Platinum embossing powder and then colored the letters in with Distress Markers in the matching colors to the background. I die cut using the matching dies and popped it up using Dimensionals over the die-cut oval stamped with two of the small tag line stamps from the Stained Glass Greetings set. I used foam tape to pop the oval up over the background.

I added a few sequins to the background just to add a little Christmas shimmer. It’s SO beautiful!
